Medicines

If a child is required to take oral medication or an injection during school hours, and the parent or guardian cannot come to the school to administer the medication, the principal or his designee may do so in compliance with the following regulations.

A written request must be properly executed and delivered in person by the parent or guardian to the principal of the school in which the child is enrolled.

All medication to be administered by school personnel must be prescribed and directions given by a physician for administering the medicine. No internal medication, including aspirin, bufferin or any "across the counter" medication shall be administered unless  it is a prescribed medication. No topical medication shall be applied to the student's skin in any form such as peroxide, Neosporin, merthiolate, or like medication, without complying with the same requirements for administering oral medication or an injection.

The appropriate school employee administering oral medication should require that the student ingest the medication in their presence.

The principal is responsible for:

a. Determining that the request is properly executed.

b. Informing and instructing the appropriate personned
in the school of the action taken on the request.
c. Keeping medication in a safe place.

d. Returning all unused medicine to parent or guardian.

The principal, with superintendent's approval, may reject any request for administration of medicine and a written reason will be given by principal to the person making the request.

A copy of this policy will be given to the parent or guardian of a student at the time a request to administer medication is made.
