The general definition
of Physical Therapy is the art and science of physical treatment of any
bodily condition to restore function, relieve pain, and prevent
disability by use of physical and other properties of heat, light,
water, electricity, sound, massage, therapeutic exercise, mobilization,
passive manipulation, mechanical devices and other physical
rehabilitation measures. In the educational environment, the physical
therapist helps develop and maintain the physical potential of a child
with disabilities for independence and participation in the classroom
and in other educational activities. The practice of physical therapy in
educational settings consists of evaluating students with disabilities,
planning and implementing treatment for students, improving or slowing
the rate of regression of the motor functions of a child to enable him
to function in his educational environment, recommending equipment, and
providing information to parents and educational personnel. At Pine
Ridge I work with a number of students who are unable to walk or move
about the school campus independently. I do activities that help improve
these skills and the strength they need to be more independent. I then
show the teachers and paraeducators how to help them do this when I am
not there. There are also children who need special chairs and desks or
other types of equipment to help them participate at school and I help
in getting these things for them. Although difficult at times, it is a
blessing to be able to work with these children. I know I can speak for
all the great people I work with at Pine Ridge when I say, each small
step "our kids" make is tremendous in our eyes and rewarding to us.
